One of our companies is currently looking for a Staff Software Engineer, Devices in New York.

This role is a great fit for an experienced software engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is eager to contribute to a mission-driven company advancing clean energy. As a Staff Software Engineer on the Devices team, you'll lead the design and development of scalable backend systems, transitioning from a monolithic to a microservices architecture. You'll work across teams to ensure new device integrations are flexible and future-proof while building core infrastructure to support distributed energy resources. This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll apply your technical expertise, mentor engineers, and help shape the future of the platform.

Accountabilities:

• Architect and implement core platform services that support multiple use cases and real-world scalability.
• Drive the migration from monolithic systems to microservices, defining system boundaries and integration contracts.
• Lead initiatives around database design, especially transitioning from document-based to relational models.
• Develop robust backend solutions using Java, ensuring high performance, testability, and maintainability.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering teams, product managers, and stakeholders to deliver impactful features.
• Champion best practices in development, testing, deployment, and system monitoring.
• Mentor and support engineers, contributing to a collaborative and technically strong team culture.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience in professional software development, including staff-level or leadership responsibilities.
• Strong backend experience, especially with Java (Java 11+), and familiarity with scripting languages such as Python.
• Expertise in designing RESTful APIs, contract-first development, and scalable system architectures.
• Experience in database modeling and development using relational databases; PostgreSQL preferred.
• Ability to lead technical projects with minimal supervision while balancing long-term vision and short-term delivery.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, particularly in cross-functional, agile environments.
• Bonus points for familiarity with AWS, RabbitMQ, MongoDB, and frontend frameworks like React/TypeScript.
